Yeah you. It was a fun read, especially as a Sony fangirl, I'm sure the 360 is a good console, but I have no interest in it whatsoever, and there are so many add on costs that people don't even think about at first.
You buy the console with a couple of games, yeah that's fine, then you realise a month in that you want to go online, so you pay out for that, then you want to start chatting to people and it just goes on.
People can be naive.
Also as an added bonus since November I have 6 PS3 games, a few games I bought off the online store and loads of trailers. I have more for my 360 but I haven't got that many games so quickly.
No games my arse.

I don't think you chose the cheapest consoles. Isn't there a cheaper version of each?
You chose the second highest priced 360. There's a cheaper version. The Xbox 360 Arcade console that comes with a wireless controller, a memory card and 5 free arcade games. There's also a 40GB version of the PS3 I though. So if you're going to compare price there are cheaper versions of each.
There are many other flaws. But just by glancing at this it seemed to be very biased, whatever console you may have you seem to definately lean towards Sony Product Console. Mainly the PS3.
Anyway I noticed some major flaws. mostly against the 360.
For one you chose 4200 MS points when there are cheaper versions. There are 100 points and other variations as well. So why you picked a more expensive one I don't know. Another thing is that you picked 12 months of xbox live and there are 1, 3, 12 and 12+1 month cards. The consumer could chose anyone of them.
As for both consoles you compared accessories which really have nothing to do with the core consoles themselves. Comparing what their accessories cost doesn't mean the consoles themselves are cheaper because perhaps the consumer does not want all of those things. Such as the wireless adapter for the 360. Maybe they have a wire or they don't plan on using online at all.
This is true, I chose the best packages for each console. Yes there is the Xbox 360 Elite but if I chose to use this then I would of come up with figures much higher.
I will take your advice of trying the cheaper consoles (and MS points) and totalling them up with the same peripherals and necessary add ons.
I did state in the opening "So let's say you want to get a games system where you want to go online and chat to your friends and maybe you want to play two player games with your friends this is how is would work out. You also can choose to go wireless online with you router in case it's too far for the Ethernet cable to reach. You have a HD TV too." which is how I did this.
If you want I could do a customized list of what peripherals and console version you want to see added up. Obviously if I just compared the basic packages for each console then Xbox 360 is cheaper.
I compiled this topic for costs in the long term and for people who would want to take advantage of all the features each console provided.
Fair enough. Add together the cheapest of all accessories for each console including the consoles themselves. Compare the same accessories, etc.
IMO I think that either console could be mroe expensive or cheaper depending on what you're looking for and how much you have in your pocket. Could slide either way depending on where your interests are.

Yes, the PS3 gives more bang for you buck, that has always been the case. The problems with comparing the prices is the variation in wanted accessories/model of the console. One other thing to make a note of is the ability of the PS3 to play Blu-Ray. Something that always used to come up when comparing values was the added price of the 360's HD-DVD add-on. Now that HD-DVD is going down the crapper, you wouldn't really want to include that in the desired peripherals, but it certainly adds value to the PS3 that you can't really represent in price.
I agree with SlipperyMooseCakes though, the model you get does affect everything a lot. I'm not sure why any serious game would buy a 360 without any hard-drive, but it would be good to have a spectrum of comparisons. Have a bare-minimum of each console (cheapest models, only the essential accessories), an in the middle comparison of each console (What you have there with perhaps a few fewer accessories. I would not deem the cameras to be needed by the average customer), and then perhaps a high-end comparison where you basically buy everything you can. I think that would probably be the fairest way to compare and also requires a good deal more of work for you. See? We all win.

You can use your playstation eye/eyetoy as a headset/microphone, excluding the need to buy one separately.
I prefer it using a headset, I was playing some R6:Vegas and this guy had a microphone that recorded everything rather than pick up sound when it was loud enough. You could hear static and the occasional talking in the background.
The PS camera is pretty much the same thing except it has a camera. Then again I don't like using headsets as I go solo. Plus PS3 has a voice changer system now and I don't know whether I want to speak online with kids who jacked their voice settings to DEEP BIG BURLY BLACK MAN.

I disagree with the messenger keyboard thing, I know people who have it, but very few people who use it.
And again alot of it isn't required for online play, eg. Microsoft points, xbox vision camera, wireless adapter and plug and play kit.
On the topic of plug and play and the rechargable thing...
You can always just buy some rechargeable batteries, not all that expensive.
Again, alot of variables, but it's impossible to really even it out.

Yeah the prices here are really expensive. It's £180 for a Wii here which is roughly $360.
